Chocolate Mug Cake

Published Monday, 20 July, 2009 by megan

Cake in a Mug

  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 1 tablespoon choc chips (optional)
  • 1 large mug

1. Add dry ingredients to the mug, and mix well.

2. Crack an egg and add it to your mug. Be sure to mix it well to avoid any pockets of flour in the corners. Pour in the milk and melted butter and mix well. Add the vanilla essence.

3. Pop your mug into the microwave & zap for 3 minutes on maximum power. Wait until the cake stops rising, and sets in the mug.

4. If necessary, run a knife around the sides of the mug, and tip the still warm cake out of the mug and onto a saucer.

I would recommend you cook it without the egg. I made one with the egg before and the texture was rubbery and the cake was less than average- my friend added egg the second time wheras i didn't ( i just added extra milk ) and mine was much nicer than hers. I also had to cook it a little longer than 3 minutes but maybe that's just my microwave.Other than that, the recipe is great :)

Just made this with twice as much cocoa (thanks Zoe!) It's better than cakes that have taken me over an hour :(
Bit rubbery, would be better with strong chocolate chips, i think, cause it was still a little bland (or take out some sugar?)....but really, REALLY awesome for around 10mins effort... I used self-raising flour (in answer to S) and it self raised

And toffee sauce this cake = mouthgasm

Love cooking this quick dessert. Try adding nutellla or some chopped up mars bar.You can cook it in a micowavable bowl rather than a mug if you prefer,
    Heres the version I use

•4 tbs / 45 gms self raising flour
    •4 tbs / 55gms caster sugar
    •2 tbs / 17gms cocoa powder
    •1 egg
    •3 tbs / 43 mls milk
    •3 tbs / 25 mls sunflower oil
    •3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
•A small dash of vanilla extract
    •1 large coffee mug
•Double cream or creme fraiche - optional for serving
1.Add dry ingredients to the mug, and mix well.
2.Add the egg and mix thoroughly
3.Add the milk and oil - mix well (don't forget the corners / edges of the mug).
4.Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again
5.Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes (in a 1000 watt microwave).
6.The cake will rise above the top of the mug, but don't worry it’s supposed to!
7.Allow to cool a little, tip out onto a plate.
EAT and enjoy - this can serve two - it’s a huge portion for one!

Serve with fresh double cream, crème fraiche or custard.

You can have the mix ready when you sit down to eat dinner and then pop them in the microwave so it is ready when you finish

Instead of the melted butter, try one tablepoon of cooking oil.

  • Georgie S 10 years ago

This didnt really work for me unfortunatly coz I loved the idea!! mine kept rising out of the mug in the microwave then went rubbery so I think I'll try it again and maybe have better results...
