Cheap And Cheesy Pasta Sauce

Easy to make, cheap ingredients, great taste!



  • Serves 4 (half ingredients to serve 2, half again to serve 1)
  • 70g Mature Cheddar Cheese (grated)
  • 2tbsp Butter
  • 2tbsp Flour
  • 500ml Milk
  • Pepper (to taste)


- Melt butter in a saucepan on medium heat.

- Add flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring all the time.

- Take off the heat, add the milk a little at a time, stirring (or whisking) each time, to make smooth.

- Bring to the boil when all the milk has been added.

- Keep stirring, then turn down the heat until it's simmering.

- Cook for 2 minutes, stirring the whole time.

- Take off the heat, add cheese and stir until melted. The sauce should thicken.

- Add pepper to taste (optional)

Once you've drained your pasta, simply put the pasta back into the warm pan and add the sauce. Place back on the hob for a few minutes, stirring all the time, letting it heat up.

Serve immediately!

    Looks easy enough, will try. And Erin, when you make a roux (butter and flour) you can make a dark roux which is when you cook the roux longer and a light roux is cooked less. I mean you could burn the roux but just wanted to let u know.

    I love this cheese sauce- it's definitely become my go to recipe! :P
    I never use the amount of cheese in the recipe. I just cut up as much cheese as I think is right and add it in, taste it and add more if necessary. Always love the result!

    My five daughters made this sauce for their pasta lunch, when i was ill. Could smell it three floors up. So tasty and good :) thx for posting.

    Nice sauce but i would use more per person than the recipe says - used a quarter of the ingredients with 85g of pasta for one person and it was a bit dry.

    I just made this recipe, but i used a wee bit too much cheese. Definitely topped it off with a bit of salt and pepper to season.
