Step 2: in a bowl, combine sugar, cornstarch and salt. Step 3: pour into hot milk, a little at a time, stirring to dissolve. Step 4: continue to cook and stir until mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a metal spoon. Step 5: do not boil. Step 6: remove from heat, stir in vanilla and butter.
