Best Hearty Stew

yummy and great for winter!



  • serves 4
  • 1 can of baked beans (drained of most of the sauce, but reserve some of it)
  • sausages
  • can of chickpeas, cannellini or harricot beans cooked(optional)
  • smoked bacon cut into lardons
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped
  • 1 tin of chopped tomatoes
  • 2 pints of chicken stock
  • 225g cabbage (preferably green) thinly sliced
  • Fresh or dried thyme
  • salt and pepper


1. Slice the skin of the sausages and squeeze the meat out, season and shape into meatballs

2. Fry the meatballs with the bacon in the olive oil until golden.

3. Add the garlic and cook for a few seconds and then add the tomatoes and stock and simmer for 10 minutes

4. Add the cooked, drained beans (if using) and the tin of baked beans then add the cabbage and cook for a furthur 4 minutes.

5. Add the chopped herbs to taste and season.
