While you can get some great coffee from the baristas at the shops, they can be pretty pricey – around £3 for just one cup. So if you can make your own at home that taste just as good, it’s a must.

You’ll be surprised to know that you don’t actually need to have expensive ingredients to make coffee at home that tastes just as good as the joe you’ve been forking so much out for. Here’s some of our favourite, easy recipes.

The trusty mocha is great for anyone with a sweet tooth. The word ‘mocha’ means there’s chocolate in it – making it a great treat in-between lectures. It’s a popular coffee choice, and you don’t need to be especially artistic to make it.

  • 1. Using drinking coco, layer the bottom of your mug
  • 2. Pour in a little warm milk and mix it into a watery paste
  • 3. Top up with steamed milk and your shots of espresso
  • 4. If you’re feeling artistic, sprinkle on a little chocolate drinking mix

Irish Coffee

This one is for the end of the day! The Irish Coffee is good for winding down, or having with friends in the evening.

You might need to a get a bit more inventive for this one, but it’s worth the extra effort.

  • Make some hot coffee, and mix it with about a teaspoon of sugar in your mug
  • Add one measure of whiskey, mix
  • Top up with steamed milk

Irish coffees are usually served with liquid cream. You can top the whole thing with whipped cream if you’re feeling especially indulgent.

Mexican Coffee

You might not have heard of this one, but it will help use up any last drops of alcohol in your cupboard. Again, this is a drink for the evening.

  • Pour a half measure of Kahlua and half measure of tequila into your mug
  • Pour in coffee, and mix it up with steamed milk. You can use cream if you want, but wait for the coffee to cool first.
  • If you’ve got a little vanilla ice cream, top it off with one small scoop.

Incidentally, a great way to make the coffee quickly is with a good quality coffee machine from the likes of Tassimo.

Amaretto Iced Coffee

If you live with people who have a blender, or you happen to have one of your own, there’s never been a better excuse to make an amaretto iced coffee.

  • Mix three parts cold coffee with three parts vanilla ice cream
  • Put in one park milk, and about a quarter pint of amaretto
  • Fill a glass with crushed ice, and chuck it all in the blender

You probably didn’t know they were so straightforward to make!

One of the more trusty coffee for a morning after the night before, the Americano is one of the simplest coffees to make.

  • Brew straight black coffee
  • Top it up with water. Add a little milk if you want to

With an Americano, the taste is all about the coffee beans. So if you want to make a really good Americano, get some good coffee grounds in.
