Burger King is giving the Whopper its first major update in almost 10 years. The rollout of these changes is happening now across its fast-food restaurants, so if you’re looking to give it a taste test, you can pick one up now and give it a try.

Burger King has said the goal is to upgrade the sandwich without changing what fans already know and love about it. Simply put, the beef patty and salad all remain untouched. So what exactly has changed?

  • The bun
  • The mayonnaise
  • And the packaging.

A quality push after years of feedback

The company said guest feedback has helped shape the Whopper changes, and Tom Curtis, President of Burger King U.S. & Canada, said the brand did not want to reinvent the burger, only elevate it.

Clearly, the objective here is to deliver a higher-quality experience from bun to sauce to packaging, rather than a full rebuild of an already popular product.

CNN reported the change also follows years of complaints about Whoppers arriving smashed or falling apart, which helps explain the packaging upgrade. The packaging was once just paper-wrapped, and this change brings a clamshell-style box.

Restaurant Dive reported that the Whopper update is part of a broader strategy push, with Burger King and Restaurant Brands International (the parent company of Burger King) leaning harder into core menu quality after spending recent years on operations and modernization.

What is the Whopper, exactly?

For those unfamiliar with the Whopper, or if you just want to know more:

  • Burger King’s nutritional facts show that a Whopper Sandwich is 660 calories.
  • It contains 40g fat, 980mg sodium, 49g carbs, and 28g protein.
  • The serving size is listed at 270g.
  • Post changes, the sandwich still centers on more than a quarter-pound of 100% flame-grilled beef.
  • It continues to include lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, and mayo on a sesame seed bun.

Burger King says shoppers nationwide can try the updated sandwich now, with the rollout reaching more than 7,000 restaurants this week.

Longtime Whopper fans should go out and evaluate Burger King’s upgrades.
