McDonald’s is facing customer pushback after promoting a $2.50 McDouble as part of its revamped McValue Menu. The offer was announced in April 2026 and rolled out nationally at participating restaurants starting April 21.

Fox News reported on May 6 that the limited-time McDouble deal drew criticism from customers who said the price shows how much fast food has changed. Some pointed back to the days when a McDouble felt like a true bargain.

For instance, Reddit users said a $3 menu item isn’t enough to bring them back, and another said they would need $1 or $2 items to even consider McDonald’s again. Other comments  said real restaurants are now only a few dollars more, which is a line that probably hits home for a lot of people who remember fast food as being the cheapest option by a mile.

Among the pushback, there were some defenders of the new prices. One Reddit user argued that a $2.50 McDouble is still worthwhile compared with many other meal options, especially with the $6 McDouble meal deal.

McDonald’s says the new Under $3 Menu includes at least 10 items, including the McChicken, McDouble, small fries, 4-piece Chicken McNuggets, and medium soft drink for lunch or dinner. The company is also spotlighting a $1.50 Sausage McMuffin and the $2.50 McDouble for a limited time.

What changed on McValue?

The 2026 version of McValue replaced the earlier setup with simpler pricing. When McValue launched in January 2025, it included a “Buy One, Add One for $1” offer, where customers bought one full-priced item and added another eligible item for $1.

McDonald’s is leaning into “under $3” items, a $4 breakfast meal, and lunch and dinner meal deals starting at $5. The McChicken Meal Deal is listed at $5, while the McDouble Meal Deal is listed at $6, though McDonald’s notes prices and participation may vary.

Inc. reported that the issue is not only the $2.50 price. It’s also the expectation McDonald’s built over decades with dollar menus and two-for-one offers. For instance, if we look back to around 2010, customers could still grab $1 items. Reuters reported that the McDouble was priced at $1 after replacing the Double Cheeseburger on the Dollar Menu, while the Double Cheeseburger moved to $1.19.

For longtime customers who remember pricing over the years, today’s $2.50 McDouble no longer looks like value. It may still be under $3, but for people who remember the old Dollar Menu, the word “value” is losing its meaning.

Fast food isn’t feeling cheap

Information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the food-away-from-home index rose 3.8% over the year ending in March 2026. Limited-service meals, which include fast food, rose 3.2% over that same period.

That helps explain why a $2.50 McDouble can spark such a loud reaction. It’s not just one burger. For many people, it’s another sign that even the quick option isn’t feeling so cheap anymore.
