Papa John’s customers are pushing back after a delivery-box message about tipping spread online in April 2026. The message told customers that a delivery fee is not the same as a tip, and it quickly turned into another flashpoint in America’s growing debate over fast-food and tipping culture.
According to Fox Business, the debate started after TikTok user @sydneeee posted a video showing a Papa John’s pizza box with the message: “DELIVERY FEE IS NOT A TIP. Please reward your driver for outstanding service.” That wording hit a nerve with viewers.
What Papa John’s put on the box
One specific detail made customers angry. Papa John’s wasn’t just asking people to tip. It was reminding them that the delivery fee they already paid does not go to the driver as a tip.
The New York Post reported that customers called the reminder “ridiculous,” with some asking why they were paying a delivery fee at all if the driver still needed a separate tip. That became the main complaint, with the anger aimed at the company and the wording on the box.
Fox Business continued that some users accused Papa John’s of shifting worker pay pressure onto customers. Others said the message created tension between the person ordering food and the driver dropping it off.

Customers say tipping has gone too far
Fox Business noted that a WalletHub survey released in March found nearly nine in 10 Americans believe tipping culture is “out of control.” The same report said Popmenu found 77% of consumers think tipping has gone too far, while two-thirds said they sometimes tip because they feel guilty.
Simply Wall St reported that the tipping backlash came while Papa John’s was already under pressure from planned store closures and corporate job cuts. The site reported that the company had been in the spotlight after the box message, planned closures, and weaker longer-term returns for investors.
National Restaurant News reported in February that Papa Johns planned to close 300 underperforming restaurants by 2027, with 200 expected to close in 2026. The company also announced 7% corporate layoffs as part of cost-saving moves.
Fox Business did reach out to Papa John’s for comment. There has not been a public response to the backlash to date.
