Despite being one of the top 10 fast food chains in the world, Pizza Hut is intending to close roughly 250 U.S. locations in the first half of 2026. It’s targeting spots the company says are underperforming.

The news came on February 4, 2026, and the shutdowns are expected to run from now to June.

Fox Business reported the closures were proposed during an earnings call, with leadership pointing to a broader reset that includes new marketing and technology upgrades.

At this point, no specific locations have been named for closures, so local communities will have to wait and see whether their local Pizza Hut is impacted.

Additionally, ABC News reported that the closures are happening while the brand’s owner weighs bigger strategic options, including a possible sale.

Officials say that more than 6,000 U.S. locations remain overall.

Hut Forward gets real

According to Yum! Brands via The Motley Fool’s transcript, the move sits inside a plan called “Hut Forward.”

This is a plan not just about trimming, it’s also a push to refresh marketing, modernize technology, and revisit franchise agreements, with a one-time contribution to support marketing.

That strategy shift makes sense when you look at how Yum! Brands’ two biggest names just performed.

Firstly, Pizza Hut is owned by Yum! Brands, which also owns Taco Bell. These companies moved in opposite directions in Q4 2025. Nation’s Restaurant News reported Pizza Hut’s U.S. same-store sales fell 3%, while Yum! Brands said Taco Bell’s U.S. same-store sales rose 7%, per The Motley Fool’s earnings call transcript.

There is no denying that the fast food sister chain (Taco Bell) is outperforming Pizza Hut right now. This lines up with what we’re seeing, Taco Bell gets regular buzz, releases countless value offers, and a changing menu that keeps giving people a reason to drop in.

For those who love their local Pizza Hut, there are a few simple steps that can help you avoid surprises:

  • Check your local store page or app before you drive over
  • If you use gift cards, spend them sooner rather than later
  • If a favorite location closes, look for nearby carryout or delivery options, some areas will still have plenty of coverage
