Several snack mixes sold under Fisher, Southern Style Nuts, Squirrel Brand, and Target’s Good & Gather brand have been voluntarily recalled because of possible Salmonella contamination.

John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc., based in Elgin, Illinois, announced the recall on May 5, 2026, and the FDA published it on May 6.

According to the FDA, the issue traces back to a seasoning made by a third-party supplier that contained recalled dry milk powder from California Dairies, Inc. The seasoning batches tested negative for Salmonella before use, but the company said it is recalling the products as a precaution. No illnesses have been reported so far.

A similar recall for Utz Quality Foods was carried out recently, also regarding dry milk powder for risk of Salmonella.

A bag of trail mix is often an easy “better choice” snack many of us grab when we’re trying to eat smarter, especially after health scares or diet changes. Delish reported that some of the affected best-by dates stretch into 2027, which means these bags and tubs could still be sitting in cabinets for months.

Where the recall applies

ABC7 reported that the Fisher, Southern Style Nuts, and Squirrel Brand products were sold in retail stores, through e-commerce, and on QVC. The Good & Gather item was distributed through Target.

Target added that the recalled Good & Gather Mexican Street Corn Trail Mix was sold at Target stores and Target.com, with a recall date of May 5, 2026.

The FDA notice does not isolate any individual states, so shoppers should check the product details listed above rather than assume their state is excluded.

Why Salmonella matters

The CDC states that Salmonella symptoms can include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Symptoms often begin 6 hours to 6 days after infection and usually last 4 to 7 days. Adults 65 and older, young children, and people with weakened immune systems face higher risk of severe illness.

What shoppers should do now

As the FDA highlighted, consumers should not eat the recalled products. Return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund or replacement.
