- 1 1/4 cups warm water (110°F)
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornmeal
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 pound Italian sausage, cooked and crumbled
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy. Add the flour, cornmeal, salt, and melted butter. Mix until combined, then knead the dough on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a saucepan, combine the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes (if using). Simmer over medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat.
- Roll out the dough into a large circle and press it into a greased deep-dish pizza pan or cast-iron skillet, ensuring the dough comes up the sides. Layer the mozzarella cheese evenly on the bottom, followed by the cooked sausage. Spread the tomato sauce over the top, and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
