Plain Sponge Cake

A really delicious, scrumptious recipe for cake lovers.



  • 4oz/100g self-raising flour
  • 4oz/100g sugar (normal should be fine)
  • 4oz/100g butter
  • 2 eggs
  • or
  • 4oz/100g plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 4oz/100g sugar (normal should be fine)
  • 4oz/100g butter
  • 2 eggs


Whisk the butter and sugar.

add the eggs then flour.

mix to get a creamy batter.

put it in a cake tin with baking paper.

put it in the oven for 18-20 minutes on 200'c or more.

    i tried it as my first baking experience. It was too good in taste. I kept it in oven for 30 minutes. 100'c for last 10 min & 200'c for first 20 min

    very simple and easy cake to make
    great thanks for putting two types of recipes
    and i tried them both and there is no difference what so ever
    i recommend this recipe if you want a really quick cake to make
    and decorate it however you want!
    thanks for this quick and simple sponge cake !!!!!
    and my whole family loved it!!!

    Thanks for sharing this easy recipe. I tried making it with plain flour and baking soda but something went horribly wrong...I did use a different brand of baking soda...This could have been the issue. I then tried it again with self raising flour, which worked perfectly....that said I want to get the plain flour recipe right.

    The sponge cake is simple and delicious . it tastes wonderful when you add fresh strawberries,strawberry jam and whipped cream or iced butter ;)
