Ingredients

  • 1 pound chicken tenders
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1/4 cup cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup frying oil (reserved from the skillet)
  • Pickles (optional)
  • White bread slices (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together buttermilk, egg, and hot sauce. Add the chicken tenders and let them marinate for 30 minutes (or up to 4 hours in the fridge for extra flavour).
  2. In another bowl, combine flour, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper.
  3. Remove the chicken tenders from the buttermilk marinade, letting the excess drip off. Dredge each piece in the flour mixture, pressing lightly to ensure a good coating.
  4. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer to 350°F. Fry the chicken tenders in batches for 5–7 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature of 165°F). Place the fried chicken on a wire rack to drain.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together cayenne pepper, brown sugar, smoked paprika, and garlic powder. Gradually stir in 1/2 cup of the hot frying oil until well combined.
  6. Brush the hot sauce over the fried chicken tenders while they’re still warm.
  7. Serve the Nashville hot chicken tenders with pickles and slices of white bread. Enjoy!
