Chicken wings can be the perfect meal when combined with the right sides. Yet, they’re not always easy to get right, especially when going for a perfectly crisp skin and a sticky glaze. That’s where this recipe can help.

This version delivers a savory and sweet combination, mixing soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and honey with five-spice for a familiar finish. The recipe is easy to customize with more heat or sweetness, too.

As fast-food prices for wings are now insanely high, having a great recipe to use at home on a budget makes great sense. Especially when they taste this good.

If you’re after some fantastic Chinese-style chicken wings, check out the ingredients and cooking steps below.

Chicken Wings Ingredients

  • 2 pounds of chicken wings, separated at joints
  • 1/2 cup of soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup of hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup of honey
  • 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of ginger, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)
  • 2 green onions, finely sliced (optional, for garnish)

Chicken Wings Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Line a baking sheet with foil. Set a wire rack on top so the wings cook evenly and don’t sit in grease.
  3. Whisk the soy sauce, hoisin, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, five-spice, and black pepper in a large bowl until smooth.
  4. Add wings and toss until every piece is coated.
  5. Chill them for 20 minutes for better flavor, or up to 2 hours if you’ve got the time.
  6. Arrange wings in a single layer on the rack. Keep any leftover marinade in the bowl.
  7. Bake for 20 minutes.
  8. Pull the tray out and brush the wings with some of the reserved marinade.
  9. Flip the wings, brush again, then bake for 25 minutes more, until caramelized and cooked through. Aim for 165°F in the thickest part.
  10. Rest for 5 minutes.
  11. Finish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions if you want the extra crunch and color.
