Egg rolls always seem to be popular, whether they’re party food, an appetizer, or a lunchtime snack. Whether it’s the crunchy texture or savory filling, they’re an easy cooking win.
There are a number of ways to deconstruct the recipe into egg roll bowls, but without the crunchy wrapper, it’s just not the same.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make when making an egg roll is letting the filling be wet. We recommend cooking it down until all the liquid is gone. Plus, let it cool before you roll. This way, your rolls will get crisp rather than split and let in oil for a horrible, greasy taste.
If you’re after a classic cabbage-and-pork-filled egg roll, check out the ingredients and cooking steps below.
Egg Rolls Ingredients
- 12 egg roll wrappers
- 1 cup of shredded cooked chicken breast
- 1 cup of shredded cabbage
- 1/2 cup of shredded carrots
- 1/4 cup of sliced green onions
- 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon of sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water (slurry)
- Vegetable oil for frying
Egg Rolls Instructions
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add ground pork and cook for 5 minutes, breaking it up, until browned.
- Add cabbage, carrots, and green onions.
- Cook for 6 minutes more, stirring until the vegetables soften and the pan looks mostly dry.
- Stir in garlic and ginger and cook for 30 seconds.
- Add soy sauce, oyster sauce if you are using it, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute more, then spread the filling on a plate to cool.
- Place an egg roll wrapper on the counter like a diamond.
- Spoon 2 to 3 tablespoons filling near the bottom corner.
- Fold the bottom corner up over the filling, fold in the sides, then roll tightly. Brush the top corner with beaten egg and seal.
- Heat 1 inch oil in a deep skillet to 350°F.
- Fry 2 to 3 egg rolls at a time for 3 minutes per side, until golden.
- Drain on a wire rack and serve when all are cooked.
