Flautas are crispy and flavorful rolled tortillas filled with savory ingredients. They are perfect for snacks, appetizers, and parties.

The tortillas are typically filled with seasoned shredded chicken, beef, or pork, then tightly rolled and fried until golden‑brown and crunchy.

The goal is to have an exterior that shatters delicately with each bite. Each bite should be packed with strong flavors, like cumin, , chili powder, garlic, and onion.

If served as part of a meal, they can be topped with fresh shredded lettuce, crumbled queso fresco, a dollop of sour cream, and a splash of salsa. All of which adds more flavors, colors, and texture.

Flautas Ingredients

  • 2 cups of cooked shredded chicken (customize with pork or beef if preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 corn tortillas
  • 1/2 cup of vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup of shredded lettuce for garnish
  • 1/2 cup of crumbled queso fresco for garnish
  • 1/2 cup of sour cream for garnish
  • 1/2 cup of salsa for garnish

Flautas Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, toss the cooked shredded chicken with ground cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper; stir until the meat is evenly coated with the seasoning.
  2. Warm the corn tortillas in the microwave for about 20 seconds on a microwave‑safe plate, or until they become soft and pliable, making them easy to roll without breaking.
  3. Spoon roughly 2 tablespoons of the spiced chicken onto each tortilla, positioning it slightly off‑center. Roll the tortilla tightly around the filling and secure it with a toothpick to keep its shape.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat until it reaches 350 °F, checking the temperature with a thermometer.
  5. Gently lay 3‑4 flautas seam‑side down in the hot oil and fry for 4 minutes per side, turning them with tongs, until they are golden and crispy.
  6. Using a slotted spoon, lift the flautas out of the oil and let them drain on paper towels to remove excess fat.
  7. Serve the flautas immediately on a platter, accompanied by shredded lettuce, crumbled queso fresco, sour cream, and salsa on the side for garnish and dipping.
