If you’re looking to maximize the impact of that great sloppy Joe flavor, this casserole recipe adaptation is perfect. It still has the tangy beef filling, but now it’s mixed with carb-packed pasta. It’s guaranteed to fill everyone up at dinner time.

This recipe only uses a pot to soften the pasta, a skillet for the ground beef, and a baking dish to finish it off. There’s no special kitchen appliance necessary, so anyone can make it. The ingredients are also incredibly easy to find and affordable.

Sloppy Joe Casserole Ingredients

  • 12 ounces of rotini pasta
  • 1 1/4 pounds of lean ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 can of tomato sauce, 15 ounces
  • 3/4 cup of ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons of light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • Cooking spray

Sloppy Joe Casserole Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly coat a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Cook the rotini in salted water until just al dente. Drain when done.
  3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat add the oil.
  4. Add the beef to the skillet and cook until. Break it down and drain grease once it has browned.
  5. Add the veggies, including the onion and bell pepper. Cook these for 5 minutes, until they are softened.
  6. Add the garlic next. Let this cook for only 30 seconds.
  7. Add the tomato sauce, paprika, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, black pepper, brown sugar, garlic powder, and salt. Stir well and simmer for 5 minutes.
  8. Return the cooked pasta to the skillet with the meat and sauce.
  9. Add 1 cup of shredded cheddar and stir.
  10. Next, spoon the contents of the skillet into the baking dish.
  11. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.
  12. Bake until the cheese has melted, this will take around 20 minutes.
  13. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.
