The classics are often the best, and these fried mozzarella sticks are hard to beat when it comes to snacks, sides, or even party food. They are crispy on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside, and perfect for serving when you want something warm and comforting.

What makes them great is that they’re often something you pick up when having takeout, yet this recipe delivers the same flavor and texture.

The trick with this recipe is freezing the cheese first to help it hold together better while frying and serving them with marinara sauce for that classic restaurant-style finish. This recipe delivers a simple, familiar crowd-pleaser. Check out the ingredients and cooking steps below.

Fried Mozzarella Sticks Ingredients

  • 8 mozzarella sticks
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons of milk
  • 2 cups of breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of dried Italian herbs
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 pinch of black pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup of marinara sauce for serving

Fried Mozzarella Sticks Instructions

  1. Take the mozzarella sticks out of the package and set them on a tray.
  2. Place them in the freezer for at least 30 minutes so they hold their shape better during frying.
  3. Get your coating station ready. Put the flour in one shallow bowl. In a second shallow bowl, whisk the eggs and milk together until smooth. In a third shallow bowl, stir the breadcrumbs with the garlic powder, dried Italian herbs, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Coat each frozen mozzarella stick by rolling it in the flour first and shaking off any extra. Next, dip it into the egg mixture. Then cover it in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing lightly so the coating sticks well. For a thicker, crispier coating, dip it in the egg and breadcrumbs one more time.
  5. Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a deep pot or frying pan and heat it to 350°F. Use a kitchen thermometer so the oil stays at the right temperature.
  6. Fry the mozzarella sticks in batches so the pan does not get crowded. Carefully place them into the hot oil and cook for 2 minutes, or until they are crisp and golden brown.
  7. Lift them out with a slotted spoon and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels.
  8. Serve them right away with marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
