Waffle Maker Crispy Rice: A Fun Easy Twist on Sushi

This Waffle Maker Crispy Rice, a fun twist on sushi, combines the beloved flavors of sushi with the convenience of a waffle maker.
Why Waffle Maker Crispy Rice?
Difficulty Level: easy
Ingredients
- 2 cups sushi rice, cooked and cooled
- 1/4 cup rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Sushi-grade salmon fillet, thinly sliced
- 1 ripe avocado, thinly sliced
- Soy sauce, for drizzling
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
- Sliced green onions, for garnish
Instructions
In a small saucepan, combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat over low heat until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and let it cool.
Place the cooked sushi rice in a large bowl. Gradually pour the vinegar mixture over the rice while gently folding it in. This step gives the rice its signature flavor and stickiness.
Allow the seasoned rice to cool to room temperature. It’s essential to work with cooled rice to prevent burning when using the waffle maker.
Preheat your waffle maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. While it’s heating up, wet your hands to prevent the rice from sticking.
Take a handful of seasoned rice and shape it into a compact, flat patty. The size can vary depending on your waffle maker, but aim for something that will fit comfortably in the waffle grid.
Once the waffle maker is ready, place the rice patty in the center. Gently close the lid and press down lightly. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the rice patty turns golden and crispy.
Carefully open the waffle maker and gently lift out the crispy rice patty. Place it on a plate and let it cool slightly while you prepare the toppings.
Slice salmon into thin slices or cubes. Do the same with the avocado. Sometimes, I mash up my avocado or make the salmon into spicy crunchy salmon (using
, sriracha, and panko). Experiment with toppings here!
Lay a few slices of thinly sliced salmon over the crispy rice patty. The residual heat will slightly cook the salmon.
Arrange the avocado slices over the salmon.
Drizzle a bit of soy sauce over the toppings for a touch of umami.
Sprinkle sesame seeds, sriracha, kewpie mayo, and sliced green onions on top for added visual appeal and flavor.
Whether you’re enjoying it as a quick lunch or a creative dinner, this waffle maker crispy rice dish is a satisfying and fun twist on traditional sushi.
