Apple fritters are classic comfort-food, somewhere between an apple pie and crispy donut. They work as a dessert, breakfast, and even a midday snack.

This fritter recipe is made with a soft natter. diced apples, and a mix of warming spices that bring the final cook alive.

When cooking right, they offer a sweet and crisp deliciousness that’s hard to beat. Better yet, they can be dusted with powdered sugar, a drizzle of cream, or my favorite, a large helping of ice-cream. The hot and cold mix is fantastic.

Check out the ingredients and cooking steps below.

Apple Fritters Ingredients

  • 2 medium Granny Smith apples (peeled and diced)
  • 1.5 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup of granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 cup of whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 4 cups of vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1/2 cup of powdered sugar (for dusting)

Apple Fritters Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, whisk the milk, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. A few small lumps are fine.
  4. Fold the diced apples into the batter and mix gently so the pieces are evenly spread throughout. Let the batter sit for 5 minutes while the oil heats.
  5. Pour the vegetable oil into a heavy pot or deep fryer and use a thermometer to bring it to 375°F (190°C). Try to keep the oil at that temperature while frying.
  6. Using two tablespoons, carefully drop small mounds of batter, about 1.5 inches wide, into the hot oil. Fry only 3 to 4 at a time so the pan does not get crowded.
  7. Cook for 3 minutes per side, or until the fritters are golden brown.
  8. Lift the fritters out with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels. Let them drain for about 2 minutes on each side.
  9. Dust the warm fritters with powdered sugar using a fine mesh strainer. Serve while still warm.
